As the days grow shorter and the air turns crisp, there’s nothing quite like bringing the warm hues of autumn into your home decor. Creating your own autumn lanterns with mason jars and fallen leaves is not only a wonderful way to celebrate the season but also an opportunity to craft a cozy, inviting atmosphere on your porch. These lanterns capture the essence of fall and add a magical glow to your evenings, making them a perfect DIY project for anyone looking to add a touch of seasonal charm to their home.
These autumn lanterns can be styled beautifully on a porch, patio, or even indoors on a mantelpiece. Pair them with rustic elements like burlap table runners, wooden crates, or wicker baskets to enhance the cozy fall aesthetic. For an elegant touch, consider grouping the lanterns in odd numbers and varying heights. You can also incorporate other autumnal elements such as small pumpkins, gourds, or pinecones around the lanterns to create a cohesive seasonal display.

Directions
Start by gathering a selection of colorful autumn leaves. Press and dry them between the pages of a book for a few days to ensure they’re flat and moisture-free.
Clean the mason jars thoroughly and dry them completely.
Using a foam brush, apply a thin layer of Mod Podge or clear-drying glue to the outside of the mason jar.
Carefully place the dried leaves onto the glued surface of the jar, arranging them in a pattern you like. Press them gently to ensure they adhere well.
Once you’ve covered the desired area with leaves, apply another layer of Mod Podge over the top to seal them in place. Allow this to dry completely.
Once dry, you can wrap twine or ribbon around the rim of the jar for added decoration if desired.
Place a battery-operated tea light inside each jar, and turn them on to illuminate the leaves from within.

Variations & Tips
For a different look, consider using frosted glass spray paint on the jars before applying the leaves. This will give the lanterns a softer, more diffused glow. You can also experiment with different types of leaves, such as ferns or other foliage, to add variety. Instead of twine or ribbon, you might use lace for a more elegant touch. For a scent element, add a few drops of essential oil like cinnamon or clove to the jars before placing the tea lights inside. Remember to use only battery-operated lights to ensure safety.
